Why brands fulfill from the US

US retail ecommerce sales reached $340.2 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up 12.2% from a year earlier on a seasonally adjusted basis, and ecommerce made up 17.1% of total US retail sales, against 16.3% in the second quarter of 2025. For the full year, US ecommerce sales totaled $1,233.7 billion in 2025, 5.4% more than in 2024.

Goods imports rose as well: the US imported $3,438.4 billion of goods in 2025, $143.2 billion more than in 2024. On the warehouse side, the US warehousing and storage industry employed about 1.84 million people each month from May to August 2026, its private establishments rose from 23,190 in the second quarter of 2025 to 23,848 in the first quarter of 2026, and its employees averaged $26.74 an hour in July 2026.

Across the 10 networks here, Dallas-Fort Worth is where they overlap most: 9 run at least one building in the metro. The Los Angeles area follows with 7, Atlanta and Reno-Sparks have 6 each, Phoenix has 5 and Chicago has 4, while Salt Lake City and Las Vegas have 3 each. If you plan to start from one warehouse, those metros give you the most providers to quote against each other.

Questions to ask a US 3PL

  1. Which of your buildings would hold my stock, and is it a multi-client site or one dedicated to a single customer?
  2. Do you split inventory across regions by default, and what does each transfer between buildings cost?
  3. Which site receives my inbound containers, and how many days pass from dock to sellable stock?
  4. Are storage and pick-and-pack rates the same in every region, or priced building by building?
  5. Which retailers are you already connected to by EDI, and how long does a new connection take?
  6. Which certifications (FDA, AIB, organic, ISO) does the specific building you are quoting hold?

the US 3PL FAQ

How much does a national 3PL cost?

Every company on this list prices by custom quote, and none of the 10 publishes a fulfillment rate card. The only published rates cover kitting: Productiv lists $0.04 to $0.08 per item placed plus a $0.25 to $0.75 base kit fee, billed per unit rather than by the hour.

How many warehouses do national 3PLs have?

Stated network sizes on this list run from 5 buildings to 150+ US facilities. GEODIS states 150+ US facilities, ShipBob 51 US fulfillment centers, Saddle Creek 46 warehouse locations and Smart Warehousing 35+, while Productiv runs 5 buildings at 3 sites. DHL Supply Chain states its size for all of North America instead: 529 facilities as of 2024 and a 161M+ sq ft footprint as of 2023.

Which national 3PLs offer Amazon FBA prep?

6 of the 10 list FBA prep: Productiv, ShipBob, DHL Supply Chain through IDS, Barrett Distribution Centers, Staci Americas and Cart.com. ShipBob takes FBA prep orders through its dashboard, and Productiv corrects and reships at no charge any FBA shipment rejected for its own prep errors.

Which 3PLs on this list have cold storage?

5 of the 10 list cold chain services: Saddle Creek, DHL Supply Chain, GEODIS, Smart Warehousing and Stord. Smart Warehousing states 3.7M+ sq ft of temperature-controlled space, and Stord's temperature-controlled facilities are GMP certified and FDA registered.

Can one 3PL ship both ecommerce and retail orders?

Yes: all 10 list DTC ecommerce, B2B retail fulfillment and retail EDI compliance. Productiv and GEODIS both state that they run DTC and B2B orders from a single inventory pool.
